No one can know everything, and we certainly don’t pretend to be smarter than we are. Rather, we focus on our areas of specialty so that we can bring you true depth of knowledge. We are able to provide great depth (“7 miles deep”) precisely because we are narrowly focused (“3 inches wide”).
Specialty niches in the property / casualty insurance industry are small, tight-knit groups of carriers, MGA’s and brokers. At Deep Blue, we go beyond market access and use our relationships with key markets to help you win. We focus on depth of relationship over breadth of product offerings, so the underwriters we work with become trusted partners and friends. We know what our markets want, what they do, and how they think. In turn, they appreciate and value our ability to bring profitable, quality business from agents outside their direct portfolios.

Learning and Growing

Our founder, Matt Bryant, started Deep Blue Specialty after 25 years as an underwriter, retail agent, and wholesale broker. Matt recognized a need for responsive and focused access where agents could tap into marine markets, accessing the knowledge and relationships necessary to compete on any marine account, regardless of the competition’s credentials.

Meet Our Founder

Matt Bryant (CPCU, ARM, AMIM)

Matt started his insurance career in 1997 as an Underwriter Trainee with State Farm. Eight years later, he transitioned from VP of Underwriting for a regional P&C carrier to a retail commercial producer position. After twelve more years, he moved to the wholesale side of the business as a marine broker.

Matt’s marine roots go back three generations. His grandfather designed and built boats and lived aboard one of them, raising five kids over a twenty-year period. Several of them went on to be marine mechanics, boat captains, or live-aboards. To paraphrase Jimmy Buffett’s song, he’s “the son of a son of a sailor” (actually it was his maternal grandfather, so… daughter) so the marine industry is in his blood.

As a former retail agent, Matt knows what you need. He’s been there himself and understands the need for urgency, accessibility, and follow-through. Matt loves marine insurance and loves to win. He looks forward to partnering with you on your next opportunity.
